Discover Suriname
On South America’s Atlantic edge, Suriname combines a populated coastal plain with an extensive forested interior crossed by rivers. Paramaribo is distinctive for wooden buildings that bring European forms together with local materials and building techniques. This architectural heritage reflects exchange as well as histories of colonisation and enslavement. Indigenous peoples and Maroon communities, whose origins lie in resistance to slavery, maintain their own traditions inland. Creole, Hindustani, Javanese and Chinese inheritances also contribute to languages, festivals and music. Carved objects and textiles within Maroon communities give patterns a role in expressing memory and belonging. Cooking makes this plurality especially visible. Pom is a baked root-based preparation, often including chicken; roti, saoto soup and rice dishes follow other migration histories. Fish, cassava and fruit add further ingredients to household meals. In Paramaribo and along the rivers, sharing food allows locally transformed recipes to circulate between generations. The result is a repertoire of connected traditions rather than one uniform menu representing every community.
