Nepal connects the Terai plains, hills and high Himalayan ranges, with ways of life adapted to very different elevations. The Kathmandu Valley preserves temples, squares and workshops where Newar craftsmanship has played an important role. Carved wood, metalwork and festive practices transmit knowledge that does not represent every community in the country. Hindu and Buddhist traditions coexist with other affiliations in a society containing numerous languages. Monuments and sacred landscapes gain meaning through practices, narratives and everyday gestures. Dal bhat brings together lentils and rice, generally with vegetables and additional accompaniments. Momos are dumplings whose fillings and sauces vary, reflecting exchanges across the Himalayas among other influences. Foods in high valleys differ from those of the plains and large cities. Family meals demonstrate attention to preparation and serving, connecting available resources, conviviality and habits particular to individual households. These regional contrasts place the familiar images of temples and mountains within a broader cultural portrait of Nepal's inhabitants.
