Discover Fiji
In the South Pacific, Fiji brings together volcanic and coral islands with different resources and histories. Indigenous iTaukei heritages and those of Indo-Fijian communities contribute to a plural culture alongside other influences. Meke combines singing, dancing and storytelling in performances connected with particular communities. Drua, double-hulled sailing vessels, recall the building and navigation knowledge that enabled relationships between islands. Yaqona ceremonies give an organised form to welcome and exchange, with practices that need to be understood in their social context. Lovo cooking uses heated stones in an oven dug into the ground. Roots, meat, fish and vegetables are prepared collectively to make the meal. Kokoda combines citrus-marinated fish with coconut milk and different additional ingredients. Curries and breads from other traditions extend the variety of island tables. Bringing an ingredient, preparing leaves and distributing portions turns a feast into shared work as well as an occasion for eating. Regional recipes and the preferences of participating families remain visible throughout this collective process.
