Zimbabwe · national emblem

Between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers, Zimbabwe combines high plateaus, valleys and eastern mountain landscapes. The stone walls of Great Zimbabwe testify to an important African urban and commercial past. The carved bird associated with the site became an emblem of national identity, linking archaeological heritage with public representation. Shona, Ndebele and other communities give languages, narratives and the arts considerable diversity. Mbira, an instrument with plucked metal keys, produces interwoven musical patterns and participates in different social and spiritual occasions. Making and learning to play it are themselves transmitted skills, alongside dance, painting and sculpture. Cooking takes distinct regional forms. Sadza, a thick grain preparation often made from maize, accompanies vegetables, sauces, beans or meat. Groundnuts enter several dishes, while fish and other products depend on surrounding environments. Household meals and festive gatherings pass on knowledge of textures and accompaniments. They reveal an everyday cultural world that complements major monuments and musical heritage rather than suggesting that the entire country follows an identical cuisine or set of customs.
