At the southwestern end of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen combines terraced mountains, coastal plains and valleys such as Hadramaut. Sana’a’s architecture and Shibam’s earthen tower houses preserve building knowledge adapted to local conditions and social relationships. These structures symbolise urban memory beyond their striking outlines. Poetry, song and silver craft provide other cultural expressions, with traditions differing among communities. Coffee history and the port of Mokha connect cultivated mountains with long-distance commercial exchange. Qishr, a drink prepared from coffee fruit husks, extends that relationship between harvest and hospitality. Cooking cannot be reduced to one national recipe. Saltah, a hot preparation eaten with bread, belongs particularly to highland food traditions, while fish and rice take other forms in coastal areas. Honey, varied breads and spice mixtures enrich meals. Sharing household dishes passes on techniques and recollections. Diaspora communities maintain these practices too, adapting to available ingredients and individual circumstances while preserving connections to particular regions, family memories and agricultural knowledge.
