From the Caribbean coast to the Andes, the Llanos and the Orinoco region, Venezuela contains sharply contrasting cultural landscapes. Indigenous peoples, African inheritances and European migrations contribute languages, celebrations and knowledge. In the plains, joropo combines music and dance with a particular rural history. The cuatro, a small string instrument, is a recognisable musical reference point alongside numerous other regional instruments and genres. Saint John celebrations in certain communities connect singing, drums and devotion with Afro-Venezuelan memory. Food also changes between territories. Arepas, maize griddle cakes with varied fillings, belong to a culinary space shared with neighbours; cachapas highlight tender maize. Leaf-wrapped hallacas have a place in many family gatherings towards the end of the year. Making them collectively distributes tasks and passes on household recipes. Coastal fish, Andean produce and cacao add further ingredients to the repertoire. These practices give the table a diversity much broader than the handful of dishes that have become well-known emblems abroad, tying food preparation to distinct regional and family histories.
