Between the Río de la Plata, the Atlantic and inland plains, Uruguay connects urban cultures with rural histories. Montevideo gives an important place to candombe, a tradition of drumming and street processions developed within Afro-Uruguayan communities. Its rhythms and neighbourhood relationships make it social heritage as well as music. Carnival also includes murga, collective singing with satirical commentary. Gaucho traditions recall livestock raising and rural life, while theatre, literature and current musical styles continue other cultural inheritances. Mate, an infusion served in a vessel with a bombilla drinking tube, is an everyday reference point for conversation and sharing. Asado links cooking over embers with time spent together; chivito is a substantial filled sandwich whose name does not mean it necessarily contains young goat. Dairy products, dulce de leche and tannat wine broaden the repertoire. Coastal regions contribute fish and other marine ingredients. Habits differ between the capital, inland towns and seaside communities, but preparation, patience and exchanges around food remain familiar threads of cultural life.
