In the central Pacific, Tuvalu brings together low islands and atolls including Funafuti, where lagoons and narrow land areas shape everyday life. Each island has its own histories and customs, connected through the Tuvaluan language and kinship networks. The maneapa, a meeting house, provides a setting for gatherings and collective activities. Fatele performances combine singing, rhythm and coordinated movement, expressing stories and shared participation rather than simply presenting a show. Weaving, coconut-based crafts and maritime knowledge demonstrate how island resources become carriers of identity. Food depends on this environment and on supplies arriving by sea. Pulaka, a root crop grown in prepared pits, represents agricultural expertise adapted to atoll conditions. Fish, coconut, breadfruit and imported products enter meals according to local availability. Feasts give families occasions to prepare and distribute larger quantities of food. The table therefore tells stories of outside connections and community responsibilities at the same time, with important differences between Funafuti and other islands in both ingredients and household practices.
