Discover Timor-Leste
At the eastern end of the Indonesian island arc, Timor-Leste combines mountains and coasts with Atauro island and the Oecusse enclave. Communities maintain different languages and traditions, while Tetum helps communication between regions. Tais textiles, with varying colours and motifs, accompany stages of life and ceremonial exchanges. They express belonging as well as the expertise of weavers. Sacred houses, known as uma lulik, make relationships between kinship, ancestors and places visible through architectural forms particular to communities. These traditions coexist with Portuguese inheritances, Christian practices and contemporary creativity. Meals also reflect geography. Batar da’an combines ingredients including maize, beans and pumpkin; grilled fish and rice appear in other preparations. Mountain-grown coffee connects the labour of small farmers with familiar ways of receiving guests. Ingredients and methods differ between Atauro, Dili and inland areas. Bringing relatives together over food or a cup of coffee gives local harvests a role in family transmission and community life, linking practical work with memories of particular places.
