Discover Chad
In the centre of the African continent, Chad connects Saharan spaces, the Sahel and wetter southern regions. Lake Chad and the northern mountain landscapes provide very different geographical reference points. In Ennedi, rock paintings and engravings record earlier relationships between people, animals and their surroundings, functioning as visual archives rather than merely decoration. Sao heritage recalls another history associated particularly with the lake basin. Toubou, Arab, Sara and numerous other communities contribute distinct languages, songs, crafts and ceremonies. Basketry, pottery and objects connected to pastoral life show how available materials become carriers of skill and identity. Eating habits follow these varied environments. Millet and sorghum form thick preparations often served with sauces; vegetables, groundnuts, meat or fish complete meals according to regional practice. Fish from the lake basin has a different role from livestock products in the north. Larger occasions bring relatives together around household recipes, while the ways food is prepared and distributed make the country’s diversity visible through everyday gestures.
