Russia · national emblem

Russia extends from eastern Europe to the Pacific through plains, forests, steppes and mountains. This scale corresponds to numerous languages, affiliations and regional histories. Icons, religious images made according to particular traditions, are landmarks of some Orthodox inheritances; they do not represent every belief within the country. Wooden architecture, metal arts, literature and music demonstrate other forms of transmission and creation. Practices in Siberian, Caucasian and Volga societies require attention to their own contexts. Familiar objects such as nesting dolls should not conceal this diversity. Pelmeni are filled pieces of dough generally cooked in water, with varying fillings and accompaniments. Blini, thin pancakes, are served in different ways during ordinary or festive meals. Soups, breads and preserved products complete a strongly regional repertoire. Family tables connect seasons, resources and welcome, while exchange between towns and rural areas continues to transform eating habits. Regional skills and household meals consequently help explain cultural experiences that cannot be encompassed by one national symbol.
