French Polynesia brings together several Pacific archipelagos, including the Society, Marquesas, Tuamotu, Gambier and Austral groups. Volcanic islands and atolls have different histories and cultural expressions. The marae, an earlier ceremonial space, recalls relationships between communities, beliefs and territories; Taputapuātea is a major landmark of this inheritance. 'Ori Tahiti combines dance, music and the transmission of movement without representing every repertoire across the archipelagos. Tatau, or tattooing, can carry personal and social meanings whose patterns require attentive interpretation. Navigation, carving and weaving complement island skills continually reinterpreted by their practitioners. Raw fish with coconut combines marine products and plant ingredients, with varying preparations. Po'e is a sweet preparation of fruit or tubers generally accompanied by coconut. Earth ovens involve time and collective work at certain gatherings. Sharing these foods connects gardens, lagoons and family relationships while allowing space for contemporary cooking and differences between islands. The cultural portrait therefore extends beyond a single familiar image of dance or tropical shores.
