The Caribbean Netherlands bring together Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius, three islands with distinct landscapes and histories. Bonaire has dry environments and salt pans, while Saba and Sint Eustatius have volcanic terrain. Their Caribbean inheritances include experiences of colonisation, slavery and maritime exchange without creating a uniform culture. On Bonaire, salt pans recall historical labour as well as a recognisable landscape. On Saba, the embroidery known as Saba lace demonstrates meticulous craft transmission. Sint Eustatius's neighbourhoods and remains illuminate a different commercial past. Music, celebrations and languages vary between islands, including Papiamento, English and other practices. Cooking combines fish, stews and accompaniments adapted to available resources. Dutch influences and traditions from Caribbean societies meet in contemporary meals. Household preparations and festive tables circulate products and stories. Presenting these islands together therefore requires recognition of their connections while retaining space for local knowledge and tastes, rather than applying one culinary or cultural emblem to all three communities.
