Panama forms a passage between two oceans and two continental regions, with mountains, forests, cities and archipelagos. The canal is a major landmark, but the country's identity is not limited to this navigation route. Indigenous and Afro-descendant cultures contribute distinct traditions alongside Hispanic inheritances and more recent migration. Guna molas use layers of cut and sewn fabric to create colourful compositions associated with textile knowledge and particular cultural expressions. Congo traditions combine music, dance and memories of resistance in certain Afro-Panamanian communities. Celebrations and costumes consequently have contexts that deserve distinction. Sancocho is a nourishing broth whose ingredients and seasonings vary. Patacones are fried pieces of plantain frequently served as an accompaniment. Fish, rice and agricultural products form other meals. Markets and family gatherings circulate these preparations, revealing exchanges as well as regional identities. Craftwork, performance and household cooking thus provide complementary ways of understanding a country whose historical role as a crossroads continues to influence everyday social life.
