Niue · national emblem

Niue is a raised coral island in the Pacific, where cliffs, caves and reefs border a cultivated interior. The Niuean language and relationships between villages give Polynesian inheritances a particular form. Weaving traditions use plant fibres to make objects and clothing, with learning based on practical gestures and family relationships. Village show days bring together agricultural produce, cooking, sporting activities and cultural performance. They make local skills visible rather than presenting one official emblem. Fishing and navigation knowledge likewise express a relationship with a coastline that can be difficult to access. Takihi combines taro, papaya and coconut cream in a cooked preparation; ota uses fish prepared with fresh ingredients and coconut. Breadfruit, root vegetables and other island products complete meals. Preparing an earth oven for certain gatherings involves collective work. Sharing food consequently connects gardens, the sea and contemporary village life, while contacts with relatives living abroad add another dimension to the maintenance and development of Niuean cultural practices.
