Nigeria extends from the Gulf of Guinea to drier northern environments, with large cities and varied agricultural regions. Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and many other communities have specific languages, histories and traditions. Bronze arts associated notably with the historical Kingdom of Benin demonstrate technical knowledge and representations of authority. Adire textiles use resist processes to create patterns on fabric, giving craft invention a visible place. Popular music, literature and local festivals likewise reveal a culture that continues to change. Jollof rice, cooked with tomato and seasonings, belongs to a West African repertoire whose Nigerian versions are diverse. Egusi sauces use ground seeds and are accompanied, according to region, by yam, cassava or other starch preparations. Collective meals circulate dishes and conversation. This culinary variety helps explain exchanges between markets, farming resources and community identities without presenting the country through one recipe. Skilled making and household cooking therefore provide complementary approaches to Nigeria's extensive cultural diversity and the relationships connecting its regions.
