Niger connects Saharan spaces with Sahelian zones and the river that gives the country its name. Agricultural, pastoral and urban societies have diverse languages and practices. In Agadez, earthen architecture and the minaret recall a former crossroads of trading routes. Metalwork, leatherwork and jewellery in certain Tuareg traditions demonstrate skills passed between craftspeople, with patterns carrying local meanings. Hausa, Zarma-Songhay, Fulani and other communities contribute additional musical repertoires, stories and forms of social life. Desert symbols consequently do not describe the whole country. Millet and sorghum enter porridges or firmer preparations, accompanied by sauces according to available resources. Pulses, livestock products and river fish enrich some tables. Collective meals and drinks offered to visitors express welcome. Differences between the valley, towns and pastoral areas show how food and sharing respond to seasons, movement and regional histories. Architecture, skilled work and everyday eating together provide an introduction to cultural connections extending across both arid landscapes and cultivated districts.
