Namibia combines an Atlantic shoreline, the Namib Desert, plateaus and wetter northern landscapes. These environments contribute to different practices of cultivation, livestock keeping and movement. The engravings at Twyfelfontein document earlier representations and relationships with animals rather than simply providing desert decoration. San, Ovambo, Herero, Nama, Damara and other communities have histories and knowledge that are not interchangeable. Basketry, textiles, music and oral transmission offer cultural landmarks to understand within their local contexts. Towns also reveal colonial inheritances and contemporary expressions contributing to cultural life. Mahangu, pearl millet, enters important preparations particularly in the north. Grilled meats, vegetables and fish have varying roles across regions. Collective meals and markets link farming, livestock and coastal resources. This variety encourages an understanding of symbols through the people and practices giving them meaning, alongside emblematic landscapes. Household food and skilled craftwork consequently provide a more detailed portrait of Namibian societies than any single image of dunes or wildlife can convey.
