Myanmar connects river plains, mountains and shores in Southeast Asia. The Irrawaddy basin supported agriculture and movement, while surrounding regions have distinct languages and traditions. The temples of Bagan recall the historical importance of Buddhist institutions and artistic workshops. They do not encompass the cultures of Bamar, Shan, Kachin, Karen, Chin and other communities. The longyi, cloth worn around the waist, is an everyday landmark whose patterns and uses vary. Puppetry, textile crafts and encounters in tea houses provide further expressions of social life. Mohinga is a rice noodle soup with fish, prepared according to numerous recipes. Lahpet uses fermented tea leaves, particularly in mixtures accompanied by crunchy ingredients. Rice, vegetables and curries also form meals. Several dishes may be served together, according to family and regional preferences. This food diversity reflects longstanding exchanges rather than a uniform culture throughout the country. Looking at local crafts and household cooking alongside monumental architecture helps convey the multiple histories present across Myanmar.
