Mozambique follows the Indian Ocean coast, with coastal plains, rivers and inland areas containing varied cultures. Mozambique Island recalls maritime exchange between Africa, Asia and Europe, visible in its architecture. The country's community traditions nevertheless extend beyond this former crossroads. Among the Chopi, timbila ensembles bring together xylophones and collective work in composition and performance. Their tones and movements give musical form to social experiences. Textiles, sculpture and languages express other regional knowledge that should not be merged into one national style. Matapa often combines cassava leaves, groundnuts and coconut, with variations in preparation. Fish, shellfish, grains and vegetables have different roles according to proximity to the coast. Piri-piri adds a chilli flavour to some dishes. Markets and communal meals connect these products with one another. Practices of sharing therefore reveal histories of encounter adapted to local resources and family preferences, while music and cooking help explain the cultural differences between coastal settlements and inland communities.
