Relief map of Malta in its geographic context, with Valletta fortifications, megalithic temple, luzzu boat, Gozo cliffs, pastizzi pastries, ftira bread, honey.

Malta, Gozo and Comino are the main islands of this Mediterranean archipelago. Temples, harbours and village celebrations reveal longstanding exchanges; breads, pastries and seafood accompany living local traditions shaped by island communities and different historical influences. Valletta’s fortifications and the megalithic temples represent very different periods in the islands’ history. Luzzu boats recall links with fishing, their colours providing a familiar harbour landmark. Village festivities, music and craft skills continue this heritage in community life. Pastizzi, filled flaky pastries, belong to popular meals and snack breaks. Ftira is a bread used with varied fillings, while honey connects cooking with the resources of local landscapes. Fish, vegetables and sweets reflect Mediterranean exchange. Gozo also has its own habits at the table and local produce. The archipelago is therefore best discovered through these distinctions, from family kitchens and markets to gatherings around celebrations. Familiar boats and monuments gain a living setting through the ingredients, skills and social practices of island communities.
