Malawi extends around a large lake, with plateaus, valleys and the mountain landscapes of Mulanje. Fishing, farming and exchange between regions contribute to varied ways of life. Gule Wamkulu is a masked dance tradition associated with Chewa communities and also found in neighbouring countries. Its characters and movements carry social and ritual meanings; they do not represent all Malawian cultures. Other musical repertoires, basketry skills and languages enrich the country's heritage. The lake is a major landmark, simultaneously a resource, a landscape and a place of memory for its inhabitants. Nsima, a thick maize preparation, accompanies vegetables, sauces and fish. Chambo, a name applied to certain lake fish, is among familiar foods, with differing preparations. Meals frequently consist of several accompaniments served according to household practices. This everyday cooking reveals connections between cultivated land, inland waters and communal exchange. Attention to regional differences helps explain how cultural traditions respond to both local environments and relationships with surrounding societies.
