Madagascar, a large Indian Ocean island, combines highlands, eastern forests, coasts and drier southern and western landscapes. Settlement histories and maritime exchange contributed to languages and practices with multiple influences. The lamba, a length of cloth worn in different ways, accompanies everyday life and some ceremonies, expressing varied textile skills. Hiragasy brings together music, dance and spoken commentary in a performance form particularly associated with the highlands. Relationships with ancestors have a place in several communities, with rituals that differ and are not practised everywhere. Rice is central to many meals. Romazava combines meat and edible leaves in a broth, while fish, vegetables and coconut preparations become more prominent in different regions. Accompaniments are shared around rice according to particular family preferences. This relationship with food reveals resources and seasons as well as the cultural richness of an island frequently represented only through its biodiversity. Local knowledge, performance and household cooking help make the differences between Madagascar's regions visible.
