Liechtenstein · national emblem

Liechtenstein occupies a small section of the Rhine Valley between Switzerland and Austria, with villages and Alpine terrain. Its size does not remove differences between the lowlands, mountain districts and cultural life in Vaduz. The castle overlooking the capital is a historical landmark and recalls the country's relationship with its princely family. Museums, workshops and musical associations nevertheless demonstrate an identity extending beyond this emblem. Fasnacht celebrations, during the carnival season, bring together costumes, music and local social life within an Alpine region where traditions circulate between neighbours. Livestock farming and knowledge associated with mountain landscapes have also influenced everyday practices. Käsknöpfle are small pieces of pasta combined with cheese and frequently onions; ribel is a traditional grain preparation associated with the Rhine Valley. These foods are shared in ordinary or festive meals. Dairy products, bread and household recipes express a regional cuisine in which cross border exchange is an integral part of local history rather than an exception.
