Libya connects a long Mediterranean coastline with the extensive landscapes of the Sahara. Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan have different histories and environments, encompassing coastal cities, uplands and oases. The remains of Leptis Magna illustrate ancient exchange and urban life, while historic neighbourhoods and oasis architecture recall other ways of inhabiting the land. Arab, Amazigh, Tuareg and other communities transmit distinct languages, music and craft knowledge. In the oases, palms and irrigated gardens express an essential relationship between human work and an arid environment. This symbolism does not encompass the culture of coastal cities. Bazin, a firm preparation usually made from barley flour, is served with sauce and accompanying ingredients. Couscous, pasta and fish also reflect connections between North Africa and the Mediterranean. Tea and dates may punctuate social encounters. Table customs differ across regions; sharing dishes reveals family traditions that are not interchangeable. The variety of food and buildings provides a grounded introduction to cultural histories stretching well beyond the country's best known archaeological sites.
