Liberia · national emblem

Liberia faces the Atlantic in West Africa, with coastal plains, forests and inland hills. Its societies have diverse languages and histories, alongside the experience of people who settled from the Americas during the nineteenth century. Oral traditions, music and textiles reflect these trajectories without forming a uniform cultural whole. Certain masks have ritual functions specific to particular communities and cannot be understood simply as decorative objects available to everyone. The forest is also an environment of knowledge, resources and transmission, making its conservation significant for local inhabitants. Rice has an important place in meals, accompanied by cassava leaf sauces, vegetables or fish. Palm oil appears in several preparations, with seasonings that differ between households. Markets bring coastal products together with crops from the interior. Shared meals offer an approach to everyday diversity beyond familiar images of the state's foundation. Understanding the relationships between communities, food and landscapes consequently requires attention to local histories rather than a single emblem representing all Liberians.
