Latvia combines Baltic shores, forests and lowlands crossed by the Daugava River. Riga has an urban and trading history, while regions such as Kurzeme, Vidzeme and Latgale preserve different cultural expressions. Dainas, short traditional songs, address nature, work and human relationships; their brevity allows considerable poetic richness. Large collective song and dance celebrations give this heritage a public dimension. At Jāņi, around the summer solstice, plant wreaths, singing and gatherings emphasise connections with the seasonal cycle. Amber from Baltic shores appears in crafts without being a symbol exclusive to Latvia. Rye bread often accompanies fish, dairy foods and soups. Grey peas with bacon and caraway flavoured Jāņi cheese are among familiar specialities. Markets, family meals and seasonal festivities circulate these flavours between households. Regional variations show how one tradition can be interpreted differently in a village and a city, while songs and shared food maintain connections across generations in a society whose cultural life continues to change.
