Lesotho · national emblem

Completely surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho contains high plateaus and valleys where mountains and livestock shape many landscapes. Horse travel has particular importance in areas that are difficult to reach, alongside the urban lifestyles found in Maseru. The Basotho blanket, worn as clothing, combines protection against cold with social meanings attached to occasions and patterns. The mokorotlo, a conical straw hat, is another recognisable symbol of the country and also appears on its flag. Songs, dances and stories in Sesotho contribute to transmission within families and communities. Papa, a thick preparation of maize meal, frequently accompanies meat, sauces or vegetables. Moroho refers to cooked green vegetables, while grains and pulses have a place in everyday food. Meals in cultivated valleys and pastoral areas are not always alike. They demonstrate how available resources and exchanges with neighbouring regions shape practices of sharing. Clothing, oral traditions and cooking together convey a mountain identity that continues to develop within contemporary Basotho society.
