Kyrgyzstan occupies valleys and high mountain ranges in Central Asia, around Lake Issyk-Kul and the Tian Shan. Upland pastures remain associated with livestock and seasonal stays in yurts, although these practices do not encompass contemporary life throughout the country. The Manas epic, performed by specialist storytellers, carries collective memory through its characters, conflicts and expressions of solidarity. The kalpak, a distinctive pale felt hat, is a recognisable clothing tradition whose manufacture involves skilled craftsmanship. Felt carpets, embroidery and equestrian games also reveal relationships between social practices and the mountain environment. At meals, beshbarmak combines meat with dough, while boorsoks, pieces of fried dough, accompany family occasions. Tea, preserves and dairy foods have their place in welcoming visitors. Recipes in southern towns reflect stronger exchanges with neighbouring cultures, demonstrating that Kyrgyz identities also emerge from the diversity of individual valleys. Listening to a performance or observing textile work helps explain the knowledge behind familiar images of horses and portable homes.
