Relief map of Kenya in its geographic context, with Mount Kenya, savannah, Swahili architecture, tea plantation, ugali maize dish, chapati, tea.

Highlands, savannahs and the Indian Ocean coast bring together communities with distinct traditions. Coastal Swahili cultures and inland practices offer complementary music, crafts and cuisines, shaped by farming landscapes, trade and local ways of sharing meals. Mount Kenya provides a natural landmark, while coastal Swahili architecture bears witness to longstanding exchanges around the Indian Ocean. Tea plantations show another relationship with highland environments. Music, crafts and celebrations belong to many communities whose traditions are not interchangeable. Ugali, made from maize flour, often accompanies vegetables, sauces or meat. Chapati reflects culinary exchange and appears in everyday or festive meals. Tea connects agricultural production with moments of welcome. Along the coast, fish, coconut and spices contribute different flavours; inland, grains and livestock products follow local farming conditions. Shared meals offer a route into these particular histories beyond familiar savannah imagery. Kenyan culture and cooking are therefore best discovered through the communities and environments that give individual practices their meaning.
