Relief map of Italy in its European setting, with the Alps, Colosseum, Venetian canal, pizza, pasta and olive oil.

Italy belongs to Europe and stretches from the Alps into the Mediterranean. Its recognisable boot-shaped peninsula is accompanied by Sicily and Sardinia, two islands with their own landscapes and traditions. Mountains, agricultural plains, rolling hills and coastlines support communities with distinct histories and ways of life. Rome’s Colosseum recalls the ancient world, while Venice’s canals evoke a maritime heritage. Alpine scenery and Tuscan vineyards offer other starting points for exploring the country. Historic cities, local markets and craft traditions invite visitors to look beyond its best-known monuments. Food also changes from region to region: rice and mountain specialities have an important place in the north, while pasta, vegetables, olive oils and seafood take many different forms elsewhere. Neapolitan pizza, cheeses, breads and pastries reflect living local traditions rather than a single national menu. The illustration brings together a few selected symbols to encourage further exploration. Shared places and contributions on Kestufela can then connect these broad cultural landmarks with more specific experiences, communities and territories across Italy.
