Iraq stretches from northern mountains to the plains of the Tigris and Euphrates, with regions maintaining diverse languages and heritages. Arab, Kurdish, Turkmen, Assyrian and other community histories contribute to this plurality. Mesopotamian sites recall ancient societies and the history of writing, while living practices carry other forms of memory. Iraqi maqam combines sung poetry and instruments within an interpretive art learned through contact with musicians. Date palms provide an agricultural and cultural reference connected with cultivation knowledge and household uses. Masgouf cooking prepares opened fish beside a fire, particularly in traditions associated with the rivers. Dolma brings stuffed leaves or vegetables together in recipes also widely shared with neighbouring regions. Rice, breads and vegetables complete meals according to the household and available resources. Tea and dates accompany visits, allowing conversation to continue beyond the main dishes. Food brought together for celebrations shows how local products and family skills become means of receiving others and passing on knowledge, while regional differences remain visible around the shared table.
