Relief map of Indonesia in its geographic context, with Borobudur, volcano, terraced rice fields, traditional house, nasi goreng fried rice, satay skewers, coffee.

Indonesia is a transcontinental archipelago, principally Asian; its territory on New Guinea belongs geographically to Oceania. Java, Sumatra, Bali, Sulawesi and many other islands maintain diverse languages, traditions and cuisines, shaped by local landscapes and maritime exchanges. Borobudur represents a religious heritage on Java, whereas traditional houses and rice terraces reveal other skills belonging to particular communities. Textile arts, music and celebrations vary with islands and beliefs. Volcanoes provide a landscape reference shared by several territories without erasing their differences. Nasi goreng turns rice into a stir-fried dish; satay combines skewers with accompaniments whose sauces vary. Coffee connects island growing areas with cultivation and preparation skills. Fish, coconut and spices have different roles across regional kitchens. Family meals and street food reveal maritime exchanges as well as local recipes. Indonesian diversity is therefore best explored island by island, with attention to distinct cultural and culinary traditions. Familiar dishes offer starting points rather than a complete portrait of this vast archipelago.
