Relief map of India in its geographic context, with Taj Mahal, carved temple, Himalayas, Kerala boat, dosa, thali meal, tea.

From the Himalayas to tropical coastlines, India brings together many peoples, languages and forms of heritage. Rice and wheat-based cooking, pulses, spices and tea traditions vary widely between regions, communities and households, alongside diverse craft and musical practices. The Taj Mahal represents a Mughal architectural heritage, while carved temples and textile arts open paths into other traditions. Music, dance and festivities take many forms according to languages, religions and territories. Food expresses this plurality: dosa, a thin preparation made from fermented batter, is associated with southern traditions. A thali brings several dishes together in one serving, with combinations changing between regions. Tea is prepared and shared in different ways. Rice, wheat, pulses and spices do not have the same role everywhere; vegetarian habits and fish recipes belong to particular contexts. Family meals and street kitchens make this variety tangible through local skills and longstanding exchanges. Indian cooking requires attention to those differences rather than treating one dish or flavour as representative of the whole country.
