In the western Pacific, the Northern Mariana Islands combine volcanic landscapes and raised coral lands. Saipan, Tinian and Rota have different histories and environments that remain visible in their communities. Chamorro and Carolinian heritage represent two distinct traditions, alongside influences from migration and successive colonial periods. Languages, songs, dance and navigation transmit these memories without producing a single uniform island culture. Latte stones, pillars topped by rounded capstones, recall ancient Mariana architecture and the buildings they once supported. They have become a powerful reference for Chamorro identity. Weaving and maritime knowledge likewise express careful use of the materials available on the islands. Large family gatherings give food a central place. Red rice, coloured with annatto, commonly accompanies celebration dishes. Kelaguen combines meat or fish with citrus, with some versions also including grated coconut. Fish, root crops and Carolinian preparations enrich other household menus. Foods shared during fiestas reveal the mutual support of extended families as well as exchanges with Asia and the wider Pacific. Individual households retain their own preferences, while contemporary cooks adapt inherited recipes to new ingredients and occasions.
