Heard and McDonald Islands rise from the southern Indian Ocean in a subantarctic environment exposed to powerful winds and storms. Big Ben volcano dominates Heard Island, surrounded by glaciers and shores used by seabirds and marine mammals. These lands have no permanent population, so their human heritage concerns navigation, historical sealing and scientific exploration rather than village traditions. An Australian station operated at Atlas Cove from 1947 until 1955. Its story survives in expedition records and should not be confused with a present station occupied throughout the year. Recent campaigns combine ecosystem observations with efforts to reduce the human footprint, including the removal of historical waste. Big Ben expresses the islands’ volcanic character, while their wildlife represents the significance of this protected environment. There is no national cuisine to assign to them. Expedition meals belong to polar logistics: transported provisions, durable ingredients and menus prepared aboard ships or during field operations. Eating together supports the working life of temporary teams. These practical arrangements are part of modern expedition culture, rather than an indigenous food tradition, and do not turn the islands’ protected animals into culinary ingredients.
