On the western part of Hispaniola, Haiti combines mountains, agricultural plains and cities whose memories connect with revolution and independence. Haitian Creole carries stories, songs and everyday exchanges alongside French and other cultural expressions. Painting gives space to scenes of life, imaginative worlds and very different styles rather than one uniform school. Music and religious ceremonies belong to varied contexts in which African and Caribbean heritages remain important. Joumou soup is a particularly meaningful symbol: preparing and sharing it recalls acquired freedom and collective dignity. Made with giraumon squash, it combines vegetables, meat, pasta and seasonings according to household preference, especially for the first of January. Diri ak pwa brings rice and beans together in other meals. Plantains and sauces contribute additional textures and flavours. Making large pots involves several generations, and distributing portions connects historical memory with practical acts of welcome and solidarity. Different family interpretations keep the recipe alive, giving the shared meal a personal meaning as well as a place in a wider cultural history.
