Grenada brings together a main island and smaller islands, including Carriacou, in the southern Caribbean. Hills, gardens and maritime activities give these places different rhythms of life. African and Caribbean heritages nourish music, dancing and storytelling, with practices particular to individual communities. Carnival combines costumes, calypso and soca with creative expression and social memory. On Carriacou, some musical and ceremonial traditions retain distinct references rather than simply reproducing those of the main island. Nutmeg, represented on the flag, recalls the role of spices in agriculture and the archipelago's exchanges. Oil down is a communal preparation in which coconut milk, breadfruit and other ingredients cook together, with additions differing between households. Fish and local vegetables also form many meals. Spices flavour savoury recipes as well as sweets, linking the garden with the table. Preparing a large pot for others turns cooking into shared work. Distributing portions strengthens relationships between relatives, neighbours and guests, making a familiar dish part of the practical expression of island hospitality.
