From the Gulf of Guinea coast to northern savannahs, Ghana contains regions with distinct languages and histories. Akan, Ewe, Ga and northern cultures contribute to a plural identity rather than one uniform tradition. Kente combines woven strips, colours and compositions whose uses depend on communities and occasions. Adinkra signs refer to ideas, proverbs and values, allowing some decoration to be read as a form of speech. Highlife music brings local heritages into dialogue with instruments introduced from elsewhere, while celebrations and dances retain regional repertoires. In cooking, fufu is a pounded preparation of roots or plantain, generally served with soup. Waakye combines rice and beans with accompaniments selected according to the vendor or household. Northern regions give greater importance to certain grains and different preparations. Communal meals and street food connect these flavours with conversation, mutual assistance and the work of cooks passing on their gestures. The combinations offered at a particular table reflect local resources and personal preferences as much as familiar national dish names.
