Micronesia · national emblem

The Federated States of Micronesia bring together Pacific islands distributed across Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. These groups have different languages, landscapes and traditions, from atolls to volcanic islands. On Pohnpei, Nan Madol comprises stone constructions on small islets, recalling the political and ceremonial organisation of an earlier society. On Yap, large stones used in certain forms of exchange represent another inheritance whose value depends on history and social relationships. Navigation, canoe building and reading ocean conditions demonstrate skills passed on through apprenticeship. It would be misleading to combine all these practices into one uniform culture. Breadfruit, taro, coconut and fish are important food resources, with variations between islands. Preparations may accompany family gatherings and ceremonies in which gifts and the distribution of food carry social meanings. Contemporary habits also incorporate imported products without removing knowledge associated with gardens and the sea. These regional contrasts provide a fuller introduction to Micronesian life than a single emblem or recipe.
