At the entrance to the Red Sea, Djibouti combines coasts, volcanic terrain and arid landscapes with a long history of movement. Afar and Somali cultures have important roles, alongside connections with the Arabian Peninsula and other parts of the Horn of Africa. Oral poetry transmits narratives, observations and community memories. Songs and dances at family ceremonies give collective form to this spoken heritage. Maritime traditions recall port exchanges, while pastoral knowledge expresses a different relationship with resources and the landscape. Clothing and household objects preserve skills and uses belonging to the groups that make them. Lahoh, a soft flatbread, accompanies sauces or is eaten with sweet preparations. Fah-fah is a meat and vegetable soup with household variations. Rice, fish and spiced tea complete different kinds of meals. Food shared during visits connects local preferences with regional exchanges, while the care given to guests extends family relationships. Coastal and inland habits need to be distinguished, making the table a setting where different backgrounds can meet.
