Discover Cuba
In the Caribbean, Cuba combines agricultural plains, mountains and cities whose histories reflect African, European and regional encounters. Havana, Santiago and the countryside have different cultural accents rather than one identical tradition. Son brings voices, strings and percussion into dialogue, while rumba combines singing, rhythm and dancing in community spaces. Both carry social memories and continue to nourish contemporary creativity. Tobacco traditions preserve agricultural and craft knowledge without defining the entirety of Cuban identity. The architecture of squares and houses recalls further exchanges alongside the unequal relationships of colonial history. Cooking combines rice and beans in several preparations whose names and uses change between regions. Ropa vieja is shredded meat cooked in a seasoned sauce. Plantains, cassava and other vegetables accompany meals according to preference and availability. Family tables make room for inherited recipes and the adaptations of individual cooks. Coffee served afterwards often extends conversation, allowing food to support time spent together and memories of relatives, places and the people who taught a familiar dish.
