Congo-Kinshasa stretches from the Atlantic towards the Great Lakes around an immense river basin. Its many languages and agricultural, forest and urban regions make any single description of cultural identity inadequate. Congolese rumba, a heritage shared with Congo-Brazzaville, transforms historical exchanges into songs and dancing, particularly in cities. Arts associated with Luba, Kuba, Kongo and numerous other communities carry specific narratives and uses. Textiles and carved objects need to be understood in their own contexts as well as appreciated for their appearance. The river itself symbolises movement, work and connections between places. Cooking prepares pondu from cassava leaves, with recipes that vary between households and regions. Fufu, a thick preparation whose ingredients also differ locally, accompanies sauces and vegetables. Fish, plantains and other agricultural products complete meals according to available resources. Shared dishes at ceremonies and family gatherings bring local ingredients together with inherited preferences and collective work. The effort required to receive others makes food part of social relationships and intergenerational transmission.
