A West African country of savannah landscapes, Burkina Faso connects agricultural regions with drier areas in the north. Mossi, Bobo, Lobi and many other communities maintain their own languages, arts and forms of memory. The balafon, an instrument with wooden keys, accompanies repertoires learned through contact with experienced musicians; some traditions extend across neighbouring countries. Masks belong to particular community contexts and should not be reduced to decorative objects. Their shapes and uses refer to local narratives, responsibilities and occasions. Textiles, sculpture and filmmaking reveal other dimensions of cultural life, linking inherited techniques with contemporary expression. Tô is a thick grain preparation served with vegetable or leafy sauces. Riz gras brings rice and other ingredients together in a seasoned dish. Ingredients vary with availability and regional preferences rather than following one fixed national recipe. Ceremonial meals and food prepared for visitors give cooking an important place in mutual assistance and welcome. The work of making enough for others connects a shared table with wider social relationships.
