In the South Caucasus, Armenia combines high plateaus, cultivated valleys and mountainous landscapes. Monasteries, manuscripts and oral traditions bear witness to a long Christian history, while contemporary cultural life includes a wider variety of practices. The duduk, a reed instrument traditionally made from apricot wood, produces a warm tone heard in ceremonial and secular repertoires. Khachkars are carved stones featuring a cross surrounded by ornamental designs; they may express devotion or commemorate people and events. Group dancing and family storytelling also contribute to the transmission of heritage beyond monuments and museums. In the kitchen, lavash is a thin bread whose communal preparation and oven baking carry important skills. It accompanies cheese, fresh herbs and grilled dishes. Dolma, made with stuffed leaves or vegetables, belongs to a wider regional family of recipes with local interpretations. Apricots, walnuts and preserved fruits add further flavours. Dishes passed between diners make the Armenian table a setting for conversation, remembering relatives and continuing familiar gestures of welcome.
