Relief map of Argentina in its geographic context, with Andes, Perito Moreno glacier, Iguazu Falls, Buenos Aires architecture, asado barbecue, empanadas, mate.

The country extends from subtropical northern regions to Patagonia. Andean traditions, the open pampas and many migration histories give its provinces distinct cultures, food customs and ways of relating to their landscapes. In Buenos Aires, tango connects music and dance with the history of neighbourhoods around the Río de la Plata. Provincial musical traditions offer other perspectives, especially in the Andean north. Perito Moreno glacier and Iguazu Falls illustrate the scale of the country’s natural contrasts without standing for every culture around them. Asado is both a way of cooking meat and an occasion to gather. Empanadas change their fillings and preparation between provinces, while mate accompanies conversation and shared breaks. Vineyards, livestock farming and crops contribute further ingredients. Indigenous heritage and migration histories meet in these practices, which take different forms in family kitchens, local festivities and major cities. Regional food provides a useful counterpart to the country’s familiar landscape symbols.
