Saudi Arabia links the Red Sea and Gulf shores with high plateaus, oases and the mountains of the southwest. This geography helps explain different heritages in the Hijaz, Najd and Asir rather than a uniform tradition. Family gatherings give an important role to poetry, storytelling and the careful welcome of guests. Al-Ardah combines singing, percussion and coordinated movement, expressing social cohesion and regional memory. The colourful interior designs of Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, traditionally made by women, offer another distinctive artistic language. Arabic coffee, frequently flavoured with cardamom, is poured into small cups and offered with dates. The sequence and attention involved in serving are themselves part of hospitality. Kabsa combines spiced rice and meat, with considerable variation in household preparation. Coastal cooking also makes use of fish, while breads and dishes from the southwest reflect different agricultural resources. Meals shared during visits and celebrations allow these regional preferences to meet. Their meaning lies in both the ingredients and the relationships created around serving them.
