Antigua and Barbuda brings together two Caribbean islands with different landscapes and rhythms: Antigua has many sheltered bays, while Barbuda is distinguished by more open coastal spaces. Maritime heritage recalls Atlantic exchanges, colonial rule and communities shaped substantially by the region's African history. Antigua's carnival gives a stage to calypso, soca and steelpan groups, expressing creative skill as well as memories of emancipation. Historic naval installations are more than picturesque scenery; they also provide ways to discuss labour and unequal relationships in the past. In local kitchens, fungi is a cornmeal preparation frequently combined with okra. Pepperpot brings vegetables and meat together in a stew whose composition varies between households. Saltfish, breads and seafood add other familiar elements to the table, with different preferences on the two islands. Festival meals and recipes passed between generations connect Caribbean ingredients with acts of welcome. Preparing substantial dishes for relatives and neighbours makes food part of social solidarity as well as celebration.
