Angola extends from an Atlantic coastline towards upland plateaus and the drier landscapes of the south. Languages and cultures including Kimbundu, Umbundu and Kikongo reveal histories that reach far beyond Luanda. Semba connects music and dancing with social occasions, while contemporary styles continue exchanges between neighbourhoods and generations. Among Lunda and Chokwe communities, sona are drawings traced in sand: continuous lines accompany stories and convey forms of knowledge. They offer insight into a particular tradition rather than a heritage that should be attributed equally to every Angolan. Carved objects and textiles provide additional ways of carrying local memories and artistic skills. Funge, a thick preparation made from cassava or maize, is eaten with sauces and vegetables. Chicken moamba uses a palm-based sauce, while fish and seafood have a stronger presence along the coast. Dishes brought together for family gatherings reflect regional resources, the preferences of individual cooks and the pleasure of eating from a shared spread.
