At the Edge of the World — Phang Nga Bay In southern Thailand, Phang Nga Bay forms an instantly recognisable landscape: steep limestone islands, covered in tropical vegetation, seem to rise from the water like sugarloaves. The bay extends over approximately 400 km² in the Strait of Malacca, between the provinces of Phuket to the west, Phang Nga to the north and Krabi to the east. It opens southwards. Here, the eye is constantly drawn to contrasts: water and rock, sheer cliffs and low-lying mangroves, tiny islets and monumental landforms. The bay contains 42 small islands and islets, and a large part of its territory has been protected since 1981 within Ao Phang Nga National Park. Why make the detour Phang Nga Bay is one of Thailand’s great seascapes. Its karst topography lends a near-cinematic quality to navigation between the islands: limestone cliffs rise abruptly, framing ever-changing horizons as one moves across the water. The site is home to more than 200 km² of mangroves, among the country’s largest and best preserved. They reveal another side of the bay, quieter and denser, where roots, channels and vegetation take over from the great rock faces. Among the most famous silhouettes are Khao Phing Kan and Ko Tapu. The latter, a slender nail-shaped rock, is internationally known as James Bond Island. It appears in *The Man with the Golden Gun*, released in 1974, as the lair of Francisco Scaramanga, James Bond’s adversary. Yet the bay is not limited to this iconic image. The islands of Panyi, Hong, Raya Ring, Talu, Phanak, Boi Noi and Boi Yai are also among the landforms worth observing. Panyi is particularly known for its stilted fishing village and floating football pitches. The best time The bay is especially rewarding when the light reveals the volume of the cliffs and the subtle shades between the water, mangroves and tropical forest. As navigation and weather conditions may change with the seasons, it is advisable to consult official information from Ao Phang Nga National Park and local operators before planning an excursion. Preparing your visit The bay is a protected natural area: visiting with due regard for the fragility of its mangroves and island environments is an essential part of the experience. The islands and channels invite not only landscape observation, but also a deeper reading of the territory, through its geology, coastal vegetation and traces of ancient human presence. The Phang Nga region is home to numerous archaeological sites. French ethnologist Jean Boulbet, a former consul on Phuket Island, explored and documented several rock-art sites in and around the bay. In particular, he studied wall decorations and paintings depicting vessels and Europeans from the 17th and 18th centuries. Rock paintings have been reported at Khao Phra At Tao, Khao Nak, Khao Raya and Khao Khien. On Koh Talu Island, prehistoric paintings at least 3,000 years old were discovered in 2020. These elements are a reminder that this spectacular setting is also a land long frequented and inhabited. Access and practical landmarks Phang Nga Bay lies between Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi, in southern Thailand. It is generally accessed by water from neighbouring coastal areas. Ao Phang Nga National Park covers a large part of the bay.
